I forgot that longbed + no weight over rear + heavy rainfall = the following series of events:
“Lalala, what a miserable day for a drive, right doggo? Oh, here’s our turn —”
[Truck begins fishtailing]
“OH SHIIIIIIIIT!”
[Heart pounds like a jackhammer]
“Whew... lalala... la — oh look, a slight curve at a low speed, how uninterst— OH SHIIIIIIIIIIT!”
[later]
“Ok, we’re driving in a straight line on a nice road. As long as we don’t hit more than 1mm of standing waterrrr OH SHIIIIIIIIIT!”
[Finally]
“[Sighs] Made it home.”
[Turns off engine]
“OH SHIIIIIIIIT HOW IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE”

I’d start with new tires on the back. My truck would get squirrelly when the tread would get worn. Extra weight just made things more dramatic when it broke loose.

Tires have maybe 20k miles on them and lots of tread — however I should probably check my pressure now that we’ve gone from 80 degree days to 50 degree days in the last month.

Sounds like your rear diff is locking up. If you have a limited slip, might be a bit worn and not unlocking well.
